YOUTH EDUCATION NEWS

As predicted, the last couple of months have been a whirlwind of activity for Unity kids and their parents. In and around all the spring sports, music concerts, and end-of-year school events, we were able to squeeze in making crafts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and celebrating with our year-end picnic. We’re going BIG this year by having it up at Little Buffalo State Park, where there will be plenty of food, games, swimming, and paddleboats for kids of all ages to enjoy!

I want to share a recent experience because I think it relates to something that’s great about Unity. My sons attend a small charter school and my oldest just graduated from 8th grade along with ten classmates. People have questioned me at times about our decision to send them to such a small school, and I myself have wondered about the tradeoffs between a larger school with all its resources and this smaller, quieter, more academically focused setting. Well, graduation night confirmed what my gut had been telling me all along – this setting, where the teachers and students really get to know each other, care about and support one another’s growth and learning, offers so much that a larger, more anonymous setting simply cannot. One of my favorite quotes has always been, “It takes a lot of slow to grow.”

This is what Unity’s Youth Program offers – an intimate setting with nine committed teachers who truly care about the spiritual growth of your children. They have so much to offer, all being students of Unity who want to impart to today’s youth the wonderful Unity teachings and practices that many of us have only discovered later in our lives. If you’ve been considering bringing your kids to check us out, don’t let our small size scare you away. Good things are happening in those classrooms, as evidenced by the parents who will tell you that their kids sometimes drag THEM to church on Sundays!

In love and light,
Vanessa

Unity Sunday School Programs

The youth of Unity join their parents in the sanctuary as we share our opening songs and say our opening affirmations.

Our Youth Education Director, Faye Bowman invites one of the children to the platform to light the Christ candle. We believe there is a Christ light shining in each one of us. All children are then invited to stand in the front of the sanctuary as the congregation says our children's affirmation:

We bless all children wherever they are and see them surrounded by love and light throughout the week.

The congregation then sings "We Are Walking in the Light" as the children make their way downstairs to their classrooms.

Our Sunday School curriculum is based on Unity Principles teaching children about a God of love that lives within. The teaching is designed for specific groups and is taught through story, games, arts and crafts, and various activities.

Children's Version of Unity's Five Principles

1. God is all good and active in everything, everywhere.

2. I am naturally good because God's Divinity is in me and in everyone.

3. I create my experiences by what I choose to think
and what I feel and believe.

4. Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God
and bring out the good in my life.

5. I do and give my best by living the Truth I know. I make a difference!
